Space sector overview

The Egyptian Space Agency (EgSA) was created in 2019 to propel Egypt to a regional space leadership position. Egypt will host the African Space Agency headquarter in Cairo and is building a space city. The country’s overarching space strategy is to reduce its foreign reliance and build up national capabilities.

In 2024, Egypt’s space investments amounted to US$50 million, with 56% allocated to civil activities. The primary focus of investment lies in Earth observation for civil applications and Telecommunications for military purposes.

In recent years, Egypt has prioritized the advancement of its Earth observation (EO) capabilities, exemplified by the launch of two Horus satellites, the MirstSat-2, and the Nexsat-1 in 2023, in collaboration with China. Concurrently, the Egyptian government has focused on strengthening domestic capacities through the establishment of Assembly, Integration, and Test (AIT) facilities within the country. On the defense front, Egypt acquired the Tiba-1 Telecommunications satellite from Airbus, aimed at facilitating secure government communications and enhancing internet services nationwide.
