Space sector overview

The national civil space program in Morocco is centered on the promotion, use, and development of satellite technology applications, particularly Earth observation. The Royal Centre for Remote Sensing (CRTS) provides expertise to the different users, promotes the benefits of space, improves facilities, and initiates international partnerships.

In 2024, Morocco’s space expenditures were estimated at around US$12 million, mostly allocated to defense (81%) to finance the operational costs of the Mohamed VI reconnaissance satellites. In the civil area, the country primarily finances R&D activities such as the development of nanosatellites, as well as some Earth observation-related initiatives.

Morocco launched the two dual-use Mohamed VI satellites built by Thales Alenia Space and Airbus in late 2017 and 2018. These assets, providing a resolution of 0.7 meters, are considered crucial for the defense of the country. Replacement satellites are expected to be developed in the coming years.
